Two Towns - One Debate - October 8
Don't miss the 3rd Annual Snow's Cut Town Hall Debate. This year we will host one event for both the Carolina Beach and Kure Beach elections.

Mark your calendars for 6-9 pm, Thursday, October 8 at Shanty's Beach and Blues Club in Carolina Beach.

The Kure Beach candidates will go first, because Dean Lambeth has to get home in time for his Matlock reruns. (Just kidding Dean.)

As always, it will be broadcast live on 106.3 FM the Big Talker and as always we will be getting the questions from you, the voters.

But best of all, when the politicians bore the hell out of you...there's liqour!
If that's not ingenious, I don't what is. Thank you. Thank you.

Online gambling isn't technically gambling

The newest fad in gambling is online poker and it has arrived in Carolina Beach. Currently at least four places in town are operating the machines and now an "internet cafe" may open next to the Food Lion.

A few months ago the aspiring internet cafe owner applied for a permit, but was denied by the Carolina Beach Planning Department because the zoning ordinance didn't specifically allow online gaming. But the Board of Adjustments recently overturned the ruling, so they're free to move ahead with the game parlor or whatever you call it.

Now for a little history: About 3 years ago North Carolina outlawed video poker. Last February a Superior Court judge overturned the ban saying that we can't allow Cherokees to have video poker while banning it everywhere else.

Since then the machines have been popping up everywhere. According to the Greensboro News-Record the "machines are legal, virtually untaxed and spreading virtually unregulated throughout North Carolina."

One of the reasons it's so prevalent is because it isn't technically gambling anyway. Players pay for minutes and if they win they get more minutes to play. If you have left over minutes you can trade them back in for money. (Yeah, I know what you're thinking, it sounds shady.)

Here's an article from a writer who visited an online gambling parlor.

Town of the Cape? Masonboro City?
First of all, I hate it when the Star-News scoops me. I had this all planned out for the E-news and the October edition of SCM and they swooped in and put it on their front page. Dohh!
The Cape, North Carolina
Anyway, the Cape Homeowners Association will vote soon on whether or not to incorporate - as in become their own town. They did the math and figured out that it's much cheaper to incorporate than to be annexed, plus they get to govern themselves. Hard to blame them. Check out these two sites:
