Lacrosse - what men play during baseball season
The University of North Carolina lacrosse team is coming to Ashley High School this Saturday (January 24) for their annual Blue/White game. The Tar Heels are one of the top programs in the country, so this is a chance to see some top-notch athletes play a cool game.
It's all part of a UNC lacrosse outreach program. Coach Joe Breschi wants to expose the sport to as many people as possible and holding a free exhibition game is a good way to do that. Lacrosse is doing quite well around here by the way. In case you don't know, all five of New Hanover County's high schools have varsity lacrosse teams.

The face off is at 1pm.
Ahh, the Carolina Beach Mud Flats in winter
...A site to behold
This picture is comes to you courtesy of the Carolina Beach Stormwater Department.
We're all guilty now and then of assuming our government is inept - which isn't always fair. So I'm happy to report that there's a perfectly good reason for the lake being drained all month.
You know that yucky green stuff that grows in the lake during the summer? Well, it never really goes away. So in January they drain the lake to expose the weeds, hoping that a good hard freeze will come along to keep it all in check. With low temperatures in the teens recently, it looks like the strategy will pay off this year.
"We’ve found that the cold weather freezes the vegetation and pays nice dividends come spring and summer," said Brian Stanberry of the CB Stormwater Department.
Draining the lake also makes for a good time to maintain the pumps, backflow valves, docks and other stuff as well. This year they're also installing a new backup pump. So you see, they know what they're doing.
Now, about that zoning guy...
Outdoor basketball courts
The Town of Carolina Beach may be getting outdoor basketball courts soon. At the last council meeting they discussed putting a court next to the Rec Center behind town hall.
Not surprisingly, some neighbors don't want it because of the bouncing ball noise, but town officials like the idea of keeping it close to the Rec Center. I hope they can find a nice compromise between the desire for peace and quiet and the need for an outdoor court.

Sign up now for spring sports
Tomorrow (January 23) is the last day of early registration for Pleasure Island Soccer. After that it will cost you $10 extra. You can register online by going to: http://www.pleasureislandsoccer.com/ Games start on March 6.
Pleasure Island Soccer will be playing games on the island this spring, but not all of them, because they have to share the fields with Pleasure Island Baseball...whose registraton starts Saturday. You can pick up a form at the Rec Center or call 458-2977 for info.
Wilmington Little league, which plays at Veterans Park, starts registration this weekend as well. You get a discount for signing up early.
Call 512-6440 for info.
I'm lost about Lost
Ok, time travel, smoke monsters and polar bears I can handle. I can even get past the big fat sweaty guy getting a cute babe, but one thing escapes me. If you were on a deserted island, would you worry about keeping your dog on a leash?
I just had to get that off my chest.
This weekend on the Cape Fear Peninsula
Tonight, Thursday, Jan 21 - Carrie B plays tunes and also welcomes guests on stage at the The Black Horn from 7-11pm. 1/2 price bar.
Friday, Jan 23 - Divine Wines' weekly free wine tasting will focus on value wines from South America. Have I mentioned that Ernie Manzella is a wine genius. You can call him anytime at 791-1251 for a little advice.
The Black Horn – Making Rent plays from 7-11pm, DJ Jazz B spins from 11pm-close. They also have 1/2 price appetizers.
The Shuckin' Shack - It's Rum Night at the 'Shack. Matt says thanks to everyone who offered suggestions about their next special. He's leaning toward lobster, but it's not certain yet. You know who will tell you as soon as the word gets out.
Jack Mackerel's - It's Beer Night - $2.50 Modelo, Red Stripe and Land Shark
The Last Resort - has $5 Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka - watch out. They've been making alot of improvements at NC's smallest bar, so stop in and say hello.

Sunday, Dec 25 – Basketball season officially begins (for me anyway) after the football season ends. You can start by going to see the Sea Dawgs play the Rochester Razorsharks at the CFCC Shwartz Center at 5pm. The Sea Dawgs have been kicking butt lately, so check them out.
The same places that were great for football are
pretty good for basketball too:
The Black Horn - Their live Trivia Tournament is alot of fun, and 35 cent wings after 8pm make a for a healthy dinner
The Last Resort - They have a unique special every day, so stop in to see what it is.
Just for Fun...
Did you know that our new saleswoman Jessica Keenan is a huge Journey fan? She had a Steve Perry lunchbox and everything. They're on tour by the way. You probably didn't know that they plucked their new lead singer out of a Philipino cover band. They found him on You Tube!
