Educate yourself - the budgets are online
With the exception of the state, all of our local budgets have been adopted and are current (the fiscal year is July 1 - June 30). They are all online and easier than you might think to read. (You can't complain if you haven't even looked at it - that's a rule.)

The budget officers or town managers are good about giving brief descriptions about how the money is collected and spent. Here they are:

Election season has started
It's on like Donkey Kong. You only get two weeks to file for the election (Monday, July 6 - Friday, July 17), so if you're interested hurry up. So far only a few have made it official.

Who's throwing their hat in the ring this year? Is anyone crazy enough to take on the one-man juggernaut that is Carolina Beach Mayor Joel Macon? (How about you Shawn Underwood - that would be juicey.) Will Dean Lambeth be the next mayor of Kure Beach? These answers and more coming soon.

Check this link to see who's running.

A massive leatherback nested in CB last night
I was jogging on the beach at 9:30 last night. I can't imagine how I would have reacted to seeing a turtle the size of a car crawling up the beach. It turned out to be the first Leatherback in recorded history to nest on Pleasure Island.

The Star-News reported this story. Read it here.

You can learn about sea turtles every Wednesday at 7pm at the CB State Park Visitors Center thru August 12th. "Turtle Talk" is presented by the Pleasure Island Sea Turtle Project. For information call 538-2918 or 352-1765.

A good weekend to see fish
The grandaddy of fishing tournaments starts tomorrow and runs through Sunday. The Got-em-On Classic King Mackeral Tournament is in its 30th year.

I always enjoy going down to the docks and watching the weigh-in. The scales open at 2pm on Friday and Saturday. They'll also have live music and quite a party.

The July edition of SCM
The July edition is here so get it while it's hot!

I took a 40 mile trip up the Cape Fear and have some cool pictures to prove it. We also take a look at the mystery that surrounds a place called Mount Misery (since when does a mountain disapear?) and examine how local soldiers are preparing for life after the war.

If you haven't subscribed yet, well, hurry up. Your local magazine needs you. Just click here.

This weekend on the Cape Fear Peninsula
Check out the SCM Pleasure Island Event Calendar. We list everything that is happening around town and update it whenever something comes up.

Tonight, July 9 – Come to the CB Boardwalk and catch Julie Gribble from 6-9:30pm before and after the fireworks. She is a really cool country-style artist. John Garcia and Lou Morini, local dudes from The Elected Officials, will be jamming with her.

It's sushi night at the Harbormasters. They also have Sake specials.
The Ocean Grill - Daniel Parrish plays from 6-9pm.

Friday, July 10 – Divine Wines' weekly free wine tasting from 4-7pm will focus on new wines from France. Say hi to Ernie Manzella for me. Remember, he's always available at 791-1251 for a little vino advice.

Head down to Fort Fisher for a free outdoor concert.
The Spare Change Band plays beach music from 6-8pm.

The Ocean Grill - Sound Dog from 6-9pm.
The Black Horn - Madonna Nash joins Julie Gribble. It should be great.

The Dive - Jam Sandwich from 9:30 - close

Saturday, July 11 – Divine Wines is having an afternoon wine tasting and closeout sale from 1-5pm.

The Ocean GrillJohnson's Crossroad plays Asheville bluegrass from 6-9pm. If you like bluegrass don't miss these guys. They do mostly originals, but ask them to play That Lonesome Whistle by Johhny Cash. Oh yeah.
The Last Resort – It's the Live Bait Band from 7-11
The Black Horn - Fred Flynn and the Stones (love the name) from 10ish on.

Sunday, July 12 – Sunday Brunch at Havana's.

The Ocean Grill - Two Chord Cracka from 6-9pm.
The Black Horn - They have a new dueling piano show. This is worth checking out.

The Pink Panther 2 (rated PG) plays. Hamburger.

I forgot two things; 1) how normal he used to be and 2) how long he's been around. This video is from Off the Wall, 1979 - very disco.

A New Look

I've always loved the OG's website (mainly their theme song), but the updated version is even cooler. They also have a sharp new logo.

12 Inchers are here to stay

Sandpiper Subs changed to 12" subs last winter as part of a discount program, but they were so popular that they're sticking with them.

Let me tell you - my family of 11 (5 adults and 6 kids) all ordered subs and we had them for lunch, dinner and breakfast the next day.

11 people, 3 meals, $72.

And we didn't even use the coupon they have in the Vacation Coupons Book

Good ol' Tom Campbell at Beach PC has been bailing us out alot lately. If you're having any PC problems, I suggest giving him a call.
