License fees go to good use
Some call it the Division of Wildlife boat access, others call it the Annie Drive boat access. Whatever you call it, it's the boat launch where Snow's Cut meets Myrtle Grove Sound.
Sometime this fall it's going to get fixed up big time. The parking lot will be paved, the boat ramps will be redone, the bulkheads will be repaired and a new peir-like walkway will be put in along the Snow's Cut frontage. The walkway will run paralell to the water, but will cantelever over it to make for better fishing. How nice.
The cost is about $900,000 with about half coming from saltwater fishing license fees. The rest comes from the Division of Wildlife budget.
Ricky Carroll to demonstrate his craft in CB today
If you're not a surfer you probably don't care. If you are a surfer, this is gonna excite you. Ricky Carroll, who is arguably the top shaper on the east coast, will set up a temporary shop at Island Kite and Surf, TODAY! From 12-6pm.
You can watch him as he shapes boards and he'll even make you one. Personally, I've never actually watched someone shape a board.
Call Island Kite & Surf for more info: 458-7005
The race is on
OK, it's official. The local candidates heve all registered for November's election. Here goes: Kure Beach Mayor - Jim Vatrt vs Dean Lambeth, Kure Beach Town Council - Craig Scott Galbraith, Tim Fuller and Chuck Keener
Carolina Beach Mayor - Joel Macon vs nobody (that's right, he's running un-opposed), Carolina Beach Town Council - Alan Gilbert, Mike Kopitopolous, Alicia Lachance, Lonnie Lashley and Bob Lewis.
Wilmington Beach improvements begin
It's only taken about four years, but the Wilmington Beach road paving and stormwater project has actually begun. The funny thing is that the work being done is about a mile from Wilmington Beach.
The pond at the end of Greenville Avenue will take up almost 5 acres.
You can find more in the July edition of SCM, but here's the skinny:
The Army Corps of Engineers requires the town to build drainage for the all the roads that will be paved. So the town leased property from the Army (which owns the land west of town) to build some retention ponds. One will be at the end of Greenville Ave (pretty far away from Wilmington Beach) and one will be built at the end of Alabama Ave. To get the water all the way to these ponds, they'll need to put in big pumps, but don't worry, they're quiet. Whew!
Don't forget next week's surf contest....
The Ocean Grill / Silvagni Pro Am Surf Contest is next weekend.
(August 1 & 2) I enjoy this event, so I want to remind you.
....Or the Step Up for Soldiers event
This party happens at the Last Resort next Friday (July 31). They'll have a pig pic'n and the sounds of local classic rock band Bald Fury. They guests of honor are several local soldiers who have suffered while serving their country. This fundraiser will help Step Up for Soldiers continue to support wounded veterans.
This weekend on the Cape Fear Peninsula
Tonight, (Friday, July 24) – Divine Wines' weekly free wine tasting from 4-7pm will focus on wines from South America. Say hi to Ernie Manzella for me. Remember, he's always available at 791-1251 for a little vino advice.

The Dive hosts their first ever spearfishing tournament. The post-party and awards ceremony start at around 7pm.

Havana's also has live music on Sundays. Mike Blair plays on their patio from 5-9pm.
