Kure Beach Unveils a Preliminary Design
At a public meeting on Tuesday, architectural firm Withers and Ravenel offered Kure Beach some options for their planned oceanfront park. Keep in mind that these are only prelimnary designs, but it should give you an idea about where they're headed.

At the meeting it was agreed upon that the pavilion should be angled toward the beach (like the drawing shows), that public restrooms should be provided in a seperate structure and that private restrooms should be in the pavilion for those taking part in special events.

Future meetings will address other design features.

Amusements May be Coming Back to the
Carolina Beach Boardwalk

It almost happened two years ago. Local bussinessmen Brett Keeler and Adam Higgins worked tirelessly to set the stage for a small summertime amusement park to come to the beach, but it just didn't work out. There are a lot of logistics to work out and the amusements company decided not to come.

Now the amusement company has had a change of heart and they want to set up this summer. This Monday the town Technical Review Committee will look at the plans and then it will go before the Planning Commission on April 9 and the Town Council on April 14. If everything works out they could be open in May.

History Lovers Should Not Miss This
Next Thursday, March 26, UNCW history professor and noted local historian Dr. Chris Fonvielle will lead a 2 hour walking tour of the Sugarloaf line of defense.

Sugarloaf is Pleasure Island's 56' high sand dune that has the site of an Indian massacre in the 1600s, a military base for the Confederate Army and according to local legend a hiding place for the Snow's Cut Maniac back in the 1970s. A skirmish was fought there in 1865 and as you walk around Dr. Fonvielle will show you trenches, foxholes and other features that still remain 145 years later.

The tour will start at the Federal Point History center located behind Carolina Beach Town Hall at 3pm. Call 458-0502 for details.
