In tragedy Kure Beach shines
It's just absolutely heart wrenching to imagine the the pain the Falbo family feels after their recent visit to Kure Beach. They drove 12 hours to visit Pleasure Island, unpacked, went straight to the beach for a swim with their kids and were promptly swept away in a rip current. The mother of the family drowned.
In his grief, Don Falbo had words of praise for the people of Kure Beach. "People were coming out of the palm trees, bringing food, blankets, anything they could do to help," said Falbo.
This article from the Intellegencer (a Wheeling, WVA newspaper) is a tough, but valuable read. I gives a first hand account of what these folks experienced. Please read it.
A few people have contacted SCM with ideas for informing visitors about the danger rip currents pose. I don't have any answers, but I did post a well written, downloadable brochure that you can print and give to your out-of-town guests. Rip Current brochure
Be safe everyone.
Duck Season at Carolina Beach Lake
I know you look to us for hard-hitting news, but that's not all we're about. One of my favorite things to do in the summer is to watch the little duck families over at the lake. It's a great thing to do with your kids.
Last year there were three families, but yesterday I only found one - and it was a single mom! Usually you'll see a moma duck with her babies and a Mallard (daddy duck) nearby keeping an eye on everyone. This mama was all alone with her eight ducklings (I dubbed her Octo-Mom). While I respect her courage in raising these ducklings on her own, I worry that they're statistically less likely to go to college and have a nice career. (Or avoid being eaten by a snapping turtle for that matter.) What is the world coming to when even ducks are spurning the traditional two-parent family?
If you want to check them out, they live under the bridge on the southeast corner of the lake, right by Lake Park Blvd.
(L to R) Octo-Mom keeps a close eye on her babies, my kids enjoy duck watching (the duck family is in the background).
Two new businesses at Beau Rivage Marketplace
Home to Harris Teeter, the Beau Rivage Marketplace is doing well. Last week a new gift shop opened called the Purple Mermaid.
They feature plantable greeting cards, journals and sketch books made from hemp, soy candles, handmade soaps, dog collars and leashes made entirely from recycled plastic bottles, and other unique stuff. They're right next to PT's Grille.
Across the way the Jengu Japanese Steakhouse is almost completed. I think they'll open in about a month, but you never know. I'll keep you posted.
