Kure Beach wants disc golf
The Kure Beach Town Council voted to proceed with a disc golf course at Joe Eakes Park. You may be wondering how they'll fit it on such a small park. Good question.

The town leases 24 acres from the US Army, but the current park uses only about 6 acres. That leaves 18 acres of woodland that's perfect for disc golf.

They plan an 18 hole tournament-worthy course. One of many cool things about disc golf is that it's inexpensive - about $10,000 and a few weeks of work can is all it takes.

I'm biased, but I this is a great day for Pleasure Island. Disc golf is a great, free activity that many people enjoy.

Disc golf was all set to come to Arrowhead Park in Monkey Junction, but then the dumb ol' economy got in the way. The County Commissioners don't want to borrow any more money to do park improvements until things improve so they're holding off on that one.

Volunteer fatigue down at the Boardwalk
It's only June and already some Boardwalk volunteers are wearing themselves out. I'm hearing whispers that there just aren't enough workers for all of the events.

One person who wishes to remain anonymous told me that "there are plenty of yellow [volunteer] shirts dancing on Thursday nights, but when the heavy lifting starts it's the same 5 people every time."

Last year there was one event night on the Boardwalk - Thursday concerts and fireworks. This year they've added Tuesday Family Night, Wednesday Bingo, Friday Shag Night, Saturday Kid's Bingo and Sunday Trop-Rock Night. It takes many volunteers to put these events on.

If you'd like to help (or if you signed up last winter but forgot that it's summer now) please call 470-2024. They need you.

Brewgrass Festival Saturday
Three of my favorite things are disc golf, beer and bluegrass music so this version of the E-news is a natural.

I'll be at the 3rd Annual Brewgrass Festival Saturday - and loving it. They have some great Bluegrass music, some great not-so-Bluegrass music and free unlimited beer tasting with the price of admission.

The headliner is a dude from Leftover Salmon which is a legendary band. (I saw them myself a few times in my Colorado days.) 2-8pm, Saturday, Downtown Wilmington. Go.

This weekend on the Cape Fear Peninsula

Group Fitness

Smart Strength Fitness is starting an eight week "Group Fitness Training Program." You can have training sessions and fitness education with a group of friends and save some money doing it.

Owner Carl Ettlinger will lead your group in workouts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for about half the cost of ono-on-one training.

"Training with your friends is a great motivation tool," says Ettlinger.
